What if Income Taxes Disappeared for the Middle Class? 🤯

Hey Simplifiers,

Imagine waking up tomorrow and your paycheck is 100% yours — no more income taxes. Sounds dreamy, right? But what would it actually change for a household earning $75,000 a year?

Households around the $75K mark typically pay about 12%–22% of their income in federal taxes, roughly $9,000–$16,500 annually.

If income taxes disappeared overnight:

  • Hitting financial goals would become easier and faster.
Emergency funds could be built within months. Saving for a home or retirement wouldn’t feel like climbing a never-ending hill.

  • Spending behavior would likely shift.
Some people channel that "extra" money into investments or faster debt repayment. Others might be tempted to increase lifestyle spending—bigger vacations, new cars, etc.

  • Saving and investing could double (or triple).
With no taxes cutting into earnings, automatic savings plans and retirement contributions would skyrocket for those disciplined enough to stick with a plan.

  • But not all problems would magically disappear.
Eliminating income taxes would come at a cost—funding for roads, schools, public safety, and healthcare would also vanish. Plus, overspending, lack of budgeting, and bad money habits would still exist even without taxes. More money doesn't automatically equal better money management.

Bottom Line:
Keeping more of your paycheck would absolutely make it easier to hit financial goals, but without discipline and planning, new struggles could easily replace old ones. Money alone doesn’t fix the mindset needed for long-term success.
